While we were shopping in one of the supermarkets, my daughter was in spree. She was filling the trolley with everything she could reach. I had a tough task in sorting things and put them back to its place. Lastly, we reached the billing counter and were off to go and all of a sudden my dear girl realized she wanted sweet buns; “oh! Not again”, I mumbled”. I dint want to go through the comprehensive route all over. I promised to get her the best sweet buns from the popular bakery in our locality. I managed to convince her and was lucky enough to get us going.
En-route, she had a lot of questions on what a bakery was? Since, I baked cakes at home, was our home a bakery too? I managed to answer her questions while I was driving. We packed some buns on our way back home. I was surprised to hear her sing ‘Hot cross buns’ while she was chomping on some buns. I asked her what was she singing and she immediately asked me why don’t they sell buns in a cart? I was puzzled for once. I dint have a handy answer and pledged to answer her soon.
The next day, while she was at school; I muddled through to make a cart with few waste carton boxes for the body, paper tubes and a gift wrapping sheet to make a roofing. Covered it with a white cardboard sheet and for the buns, I filled few powder puffs with cotton and placed a red bead making it look like a cherry. I decorated the hot cross buns logo with some crayons and wow I had made it in no time! I was so excited to see my daughter’s reaction; I couldn’t wait for her to get back home.

After school, She was elated seeing the setup. She glanced through and told me this is how they sell in the rhyme “Hot cross buns”. She immediately wanted me to play her the rhyme and wished she looked like the man selling buns. How could the mommy me not fulfill her wish?? Few minutes later she looked happy and singing…
Hot cross buns,
Hot cross buns,
One a penny,
Two a penny,
Hot cross buns.
If you have no daughters,
If you have no sons,
One a penny,
Two a penny,
Hot cross buns.
Thereafter, while we saw any cart selling corn, sweets, chats; she points out to say we sold buns this way. This indeed makes me a happy momma and it’s all worth it.
It’s a boundless feeling to see your children happy and learning their way.
