Namma Basavanagudi- The food promenade

Bengaluru, one of the busiest cities in Karnataka, India known for its best food and its people. No matter which part of the world you go, if you lived in ‘Namma ooru’ then you know how much you miss this place. I grew up in this beautiful city and will always remain my favorite. I appreciated more of this when I moved a thousand miles away.

Though, the city runs on traffic, food is the communal interest. Bengaluru food is widespread and diverse, from local chaat corners to the finest restaurants, you name it- you have them all. One can have a scrumptious full meal at Rs.20/- and all the way up to Rs.10000/-. Several small eateries are generously serving with the authentic food since many decades. Their consistency is commendable. Once such area is Basavanagudi, famous for its Bull temple and many old food joints. We have had fond memories walking by-lanes and relishing some amazing food.

While in US, one weekend, we happen to eat outside the whole day and were only associating with the food back home. We thoroughly missed it. This gave me a moment of thought, to create ‘Namma Basavanagudi’ on a table and I had to come up with this drooling beauty.

These were some of our favorites we savored all these years guilt free. Though there are many popular eateries, had to halt at this as my table dint permit. I googled them and made their name boards. I used my daughter’s wooden blocks and straws to create a miniature food joint. I tried to memory map and came up with an alleyway. Made it a little realistic, by adding Swami Vivekananda’s statue at Ramakrishna ashrama circle and depicting temples in the VV Puram circle.  It took me a few days, but the excitement was crowning.

– Masala Puri from Jyothi Prakash stores

– Chow chow bath from Brahmins coffee bar

– Idly, sambar and coffee from SLV corner

– Mango juice from Ganesha fruit juice center

– Khali dose from Dwaraka

– Shavige bath from Upahara Darshini

– Masala hesarubele from the small shop on DVG road (then figured it was ‘sri Vinayaka benne gulkand’)

– Masala sweet corn in Gandhi bazaar

– Sagu masala dosa from NMH- New Modern Hotel

I had the miniatures setup, the menu list; cooking these dishes had to be planned and I managed to accomplish. I set up the table a few minutes before my husband reached home on a work day. He was so thrilled and couldn’t stop admiring. That evening, we swaddled back our memories and our daughter couldn’t stop asking us, her set of questions. Though, all the dishes were home cooked, just the ambiance gave us happiness which no fancy restaurant could 😉
